Greening up Your Office: The Basics (Part 1)

In this modern age, we’re constantly thinking of new ways to help save our planet, whether it be electric cars helping us cut down on our fossil fuel usage, or buying more locally grown products – saving the planet has become our priority!

As a result of this, many businesses have implemented ways of aiming their workplaces towards being more environmentally friendly and considering any office goes through a lot of materials, this is a must for any workplace.

So how is it done? Well, it’s simple really, but as being environmentally friendly means working together, and because we provide some of the best mobile shelving to offices around the country, we thought we would share some tips on how to make your office more ‘green’.

Reducing it – Put up some signs around the office that show them some simple tips that can save on paper for instance. You can show them that printing double-sided is a great way to go, making sure to place the signs somewhere noticeable so that all the staff can see them.

Reusing it – Recycle all your used printer/toner cartridges, perhaps being mindful to keep a log of the numbers and dates sent. You could also establish a stationary re-use point somewhere in the office, meaning that if there’s any stationary, such as ring binders that a staff member no longer needs, they can leave it there for someone else to use.

Recycling it – Make sure there’s plenty of recycling bins throughout the office so everyone can recycle their paper waste.

Making staff aware of it – There a multitude of ways to help you cut down on wasting electricity, but first you need to make your staff aware of it as it can be very easy to waste electricity. Put up some energy-awareness posters that encourage your staff to switch off lights and/or equipment when they’re not being used.

Reducing it – There are some really easy ways to help cut down on your power consumption. One way to do this would be to turn the brightness of your screen down, as well as closing down any programmes/applications that aren’t in use. Having multiple programs open makes your computer run slower which ultimately means it uses more power.

Manage it – Applications like screensavers use more power than you would think, especially when compared to letting your screen simply dim after a period of in activeness. Ask your colleagues or the IT department to change their settings on their computers to help save energy.

So that’s it for part one in this series on how to green up your office. Of course one of the best ways to reduce waste, thereby helping the planet is to get yourself an efficient storage system!
