The Messy Desk Dilemma: Top Tips on Keeping Your Office Desk Clean & Organised

Take a second to think about your desk at work and then ask yourself the following questions.

Can you see more paper than desk? Do you regularly spend precious minutes searching for important pieces of documents that you swore were placed somewhere safely? Are you constantly moving things out of the way so that you can actually do your job?

Whether you’re ready to admit it or not, if you find yourself nodding yes to any of these questions, then you’re definitely guilty of having an untidy desk.

It might not even be an issue for you – but we can assure you that it will be frustrating to those around you. Don’t panic though – we have some top tips on hand to help you clean up your office space as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Set Aside Time to Clean Your Desk

You should allocate yourself a specific day in which you spend 10 minutes giving your desk a good clean and tidy. Once you’ve chosen a day – do it on this day every week. If you don’t stay on top of the tidying, it’s likely that it will soon get too much to handle all out once. Throw away anything you don’t need, organise your important documents, and gather together any items that you keep forgetting to take home.

Have a Bin in Reach

You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes when you have a bin nearby. If you have to stand up to put something in the bin, then you’re less likely to do so. Those who sit in close proximity to one are more likely to have clean and tidy desks. Therefore we suggest you make sure that your desk has one in easy reach.

Put Everything in the Correct Place

Don’t let things pile up on your desk – everything has a home and should be put back in the correct place. Your desk isn’t there to be used as storage space, you should only have the things you definitely need on your desk.

Client folders, stationary, and loose papers, all have their own storage place and should be filed away correctly and efficiently.

Don’t Restrict Organisation to the Desk Area

Don’t just stop at organising your messy desk – the whole office should also be held to the same high standards. This includes making sure that the floor around your desk is also kept spotless – don’t leave things to build up.

If there is a designated area to store coats and bags – make sure you use this. It prevents the office looking cluttered with everyone keeping their coats on  chairs or on the floor.

If your office space needs some organisation to keep everything ticking over nicely, we can help you out.

Tips For A Germ-Free Office This Winter

At Mobile Shelving Direct we are all about making your office environment as pleasant, organised and productive as possible. Usually, this revolves around our efficiency boosting and organisational products, such as our high density mobile shelving, but regular visitors to our blog will also be familiar with our informative blog.

One way that productivity can drop at this time of year is through the onset of those pesky colds and intruding flu. Unfortunately, offices can be somewhat of a breeding ground for illness, with the close-quarter working; particularly with the windows being closed throughout autumn and winter and the heating cranked up to eleven. Well, you’ll be glad to hear of our handy tips that you can utilise to reduce the spread of germs and bacteria around your office, and give you a better chance of spending your time at work germ-free!

Sanitising Gel

You’d be surprised – and probably a little disgusted – with the level of germs you can pick up on your brief foray away from your desk. These sanitising gels help to kill the germs that like to call your hands home. If you are rubbing your hands dry within 15 seconds, you’re doing it wrong; give your hands a full 30 seconds covered in the sanitising gel to be certain that you are definitely saying goodbye to each and every germ.

Sanitising Wipes

Try using heavy-duty sanitising wipes; you can give your desk a thorough cleanse and wipe, helping to tackle the places where your clingy germs try to lurk. If you clean your desk at least once a day, you will reduce the number of places where the bacteria can live, thus reducing the number of germs being spread around your office.

Clean Your Keyboard

As you might be able to imagine, the keyboard of your computer is a huge harbourer of germs and bacteria. According to the results of one particular study, the amount of germs on your keyboard is five times higher than a toilet! Less than 10% of people clean keyboards regularly, which could be a significant contributor to the spread of workplace illness and germs. Use cotton swabs, cleaning solution and compressed air to wipe and blow the dirt from under your keyboard. Your sniffley nose will thank you!

It’s at this time of year colds and flues like to come of out hiding and latch themselves on to just about anyone they can; give your workplace a spruce with antibacterial wipes, gels and liquids to stave off the attack of infection. Workplace illnesses not only affect productivity through absenteeism, but also through feeling run down around the workplace. So give your productivity and immune system a boost and try these handy hints out!

If you find your workplace productivity may also be deficient due to a lack of organisation or organisational tools and systems available, why not contact Mobile Shelving Direct to discuss our services. We can help boost your work’s productivity and organisation no end, so give us a call! You can contact one of our friendly team on 01444 220290, where we are always eager to boost your workplace organisation and productivity!

Until then… let those germs know they have a fight on their hands!
